Human resources problems are quite common in the field of operations research. In this case it was a scheduling problem which already had a mathematical formulation but needed a computational implementation.

The problem was that the original formulation was not standard and somewhat clumsy so after some reformulation the problem was easier to understand and was easier to manipulate and reuse for different parameters.

After delivery the customer could assign large quantities of nurses in an optimal way solving problems that they could not solve by hand.
